Could your maths and English skills use a make-over?

Sometimes, as adults and parents, our maths or English ability can let us down. In a recently published report by Learndirect, one in three workers of the UK population- that’s 14 600 000 people – say that their inadequate skills have lost their company money.

It is also estimated that on the British high street, shoppers are being short-change a massive £800 000 000 a year, by failing to properly check the shop-change given back to them. So, if you feel that your skills aren’t as good as they could be, you’re not alone! It maybe that you lack confidence in such areas and it is this that’s holding you back, with your career, or even your life. Some adults feel embarrassed or panicky and, as the Learndirect report suggests, this can lead to a lack of confidence and even depression.

Some adults find form filling daunting, or maybe it’s changing from one currency to another on holiday. It may be that you find common words that sound the same, homophones, like their, there and they’re mystifying. Perhaps there is a job that you are thinking about applying for and have been put off because of either your maths, English or both. The Learndirect survey estimates that 1 400 000 workers have been passed by for promotion because of their poor skills in maths and English! Or could it be that you would enjoy sitting down with your family in the evening and reading them a story, but are unable to?
